PlanToys Neo-Classic Rocking Horse Review

When I took this horse out of the box, I was impressed with how well built it appeared. However,the hardware for attaching the head was missing. The only contact information on the box was a mailing address in Thailand. Not very confidence inspiring. A web search turned up a U.S. distributor in California, and a phone call took care of the missing hardware. With the hardware finally in hand, I set about attaching the head, a very simple 5-minute operation. But while doing this, I noticed that one of the rockers was wobbly. I then discovered 3 of the 4 screws that hold the rockers on could not be tightened. The holes in the end grain of the wood where they screwed in were stripped. I removed all 4 screws and the rockers came easily off. There is also a dowel attachment alongside each screw. These showed signs of failed glue. Rather than go through the hassle of returning the horse, with Christmas fast approaching, I drilled out the failed screw holes and plugged them with a dowel, redrilled pilot holes for the screws, applied a liberal dose of Gorilla glue, and put it back together. NOW it is well built. Other screws screwed into end grain seem to be quite secure, so I don't know why the rocker screws failed unless it was carelessly assembled at the factory.

As for giving a star rating, it's too soon to have any meaningful data, but I suspect it will be a hit with my granddaughter.
