Okay, here's the thing. A booster box contains 36 booster packs for usually somewhere between $70-100. There are, without a doubt, kids who enjoy playing Magic, or are trying to get into it with the steady decline in the popularity of Yu-Gi-Oh! and, really, a booster box just doesn't cut it.The thing is, the set is as it says (or at least used to say), it's an expert level set. Chances are that children won't know how to make a decent deck anyways until they're exposed to tournament play (as was the case with me). Also, the price is not convenient enough for a present, where as seperate booster packs as well as theme decks or tournament packs make excellent stocking stuffers come Christmas time.
However, for the more mature and experienced player, chances are you will heavily enjoy the set (not that you probably don't know about it already). Many old and familiar mechanics (most notable include Buyback, Shadow and Slivers) have made their return. This includes many "remakes" of old cards. These cards must wait a certain time period until they can be played, but who doesn't love a Black Lotus on turn 3? Also, in every pack comes one reprint card (complete with old border) in a subset remeniscent of Chronicles.
Final Word: Parents should look for smaller amounts of cards for gifts, however it is still a great item to buy if you have the money. Also, it IS actually cheaper to purchase the box than to buy 36 seperate packs once you do the math.
