Iron Man 2 Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Limited Edition 1/6 Scale Collectible Figure Black Widow Review

I only heard about Hot Toys last year with their Watchmen line of figures - after seeing the amazing quality, I had to have one.

The thing that makes 'Hot Toys' figures special, are the amount of detail put into them. These aren't your typical action figures with "sort of looks like" representations, solid plastic clothing and ugly joints at articulation points.. these are done to be very realistic looking.. hand-painted pieces, fully-articulating bodies with real accessories, actual clothing, and accurately representing the actual character. These are figures any movie collector would be proud to display.

The downside to all of this, is the high cost (about 150 bucks, but these prices tend to go up once they sell through (they're limited edition and not found in your typical brick-and-mortar store)). Is it worth it? Depends. While I do like it, it isn't perfect.

You get the figure itself (about 12"), an oval-shaped floor piece with nameplate and IRON MAN 2 logo.. this also has a detachable stand in the back to hold the figure up. You get 5 hands.. a basic left and right (open hand), a gun-grip left and right and an "inbetween" right hand (the one used to hold her hand on her hip). You get 2 guns (1 silver, 1 black), a belt with holster (holds silver gun), 2 spare arm balljoints (in case you lose the included ones?)

The clothing is not attached to the figure, but this specific figure uses a one-piece tight suit which, if removed, would be near impossible to put back on (and most likely would rip at the seems). It includes a working zipper on the front (goes down past the belt), you can also roll the sleeves up a bit.

The figure itself "looks" like a single piece.. it has a rubbery skin texture which hides any moving parts (like the neck) - again, it's a very good looking figure!

The suite, as mentioned by others, is a very dark blue color (not quite black) but was not an issue for me.

The face looks very good - my problem is with the look.. she's got a sort of clueless, blank, almost scared look on her face. It works with some poses but falls flat with others.

The hair is "pre-styled" and comes with directions (apply gel) if you need to re-do it later.

The suit is made out of a flexibly vinyl/rubber-like material. It's nice in that it moves with the figure, but it also creates wrinkles (which I fear may be permanent if held in place too long). The suit DOES limit pose-ability as it's already pretty tight. You can still get some very good poses (standing, turned certain directions or on knees) but the legs generally have to be the same direction (for example, you can't have her on one knee and her other knee bent with her foot on the ground). These non-standard poses also create oddities with the clothing (if you pose her on her knees, for example, the seem of her pants is much lower than it should be).

The figure itself is also a bit out of proportion - the chest area seems much lower than it should be. This looks different in pictures than in person. The "butt" area also seems much bigger than it should be (fortunately this isn't noticeable with most poses, but if you set it up in a turned-sideways pose, it looks very odd). Not trying to be weird with these observations, but they are worth noting since they stand out in person, and this is an expensive figure.

Overall, I do like the figure. The fact that it's so highly detailed and flexible is a huge selling point. Is it for everyone? No. It's almost likely a barbie doll and you have to be comfortable with having them out. Me, being into movies and nice looking figures, this wasn't a problem at all for me. It's not perfect, but it's the best 12" Black Widow figure out there ;)

Is it worth 150 bucks? Yeah, if you can afford it and like the character. I probably wouldn't pay more than that, considering some of the oddities, but I'm happy with it.
