Okay, let's start with the negatives about this helmet:* It's not the lightest helmet out there. In fact, it's not even close. My LG/XL helmet weighs just under 13 oz., making it a couple oz. heavier than top-of-the-line helmets costing $200 more. If your rides are under 4 hours long, you probably won't notice it.
* It doesn't have the funky magnets found in Lazer's premier helmet, the Helium. If you want them, you'll have to shell out $14 for the add-ons.
That's it. And that last one was a nit-pick, because I don't even wear the Magneto lenses.
The Sphere is actually Lazer's lightest upper-range helmet and it's half the cost of the Helium. But weight wasn't my concern. I was looking for a helmet in which I could do foul-weather rides and race cyclo-cross. My fancy, ultra-light helmet simply costs too much to wear in the mud. Believe it or not, though pretty much every manufacturer makes a wind- and rain-blocking rigid shell for their helmets, only Lazer will sell them to the public. So even if this thing fit like crap, I was kind of stuck with Lazer. Fortunately, this helmet had about the best fit I've ever gotten from a helmet. I'm a Bell-fit head, but the way Lazers fit, they'll fit wide, long, and round heads equally well. The fit is achieved by turning a dial, called the rollsys, at the top of the helmet until it's snug, then clipping the chin strap. Rollsys has two great added bonuses. First, it makes it easy to readjust the helmet for a hat worn underneath. Second, you can adjust the fit while you're riding without removing the helmet.
The optional aeroshield is a flimsy-looking cap for the helmet that is surprisingly stable once you clip it on the helmet. Though they say it's for improved aerodynamics, I could care less. The fact that it keeps wind and rain out of my helmet, while allowing it to vent heat in the back is brilliant.
If you ride at night or through raves, there is an optional blinkie light that you can integrate into the rollsys dial. I don't know if I'd trust it as my sole tail light, but it's great as a back-up or supplemental light.
For the price, heck, even at double the price, the Sphere helmet by Lazer may be the best helmet on the market. There. I said it. Bring on the flame mail.
