Lego BNSF GP-38 Locomotive Review

This set came out in 2004 and was one of the last engine sets of Lego's 9 volt system. The 9v system powered the trains via electrified rails. To run this set, you merely needed to purchase a motor bogie. Lego officially retired the 9 volt system in 2007 and both motors and track have become increasingly scarce. Lego has subsequently replaced the 9v system with the Power Function (PF) system. If you are new to Lego trains, I recommend you go with the PF system and see my Amazon guide on current/forthcoming offerings (click through my name, then click the "Guides" tab). If you are interested in trains from the 9 volt era, check Bricklink, which is the main global secondary market for Lego.

This Burlington Northern Sante Fe engine was part of what many consider to be the Golden Age of the 9 volt system, when Lego was producing individual 9 volt engine and car sets with a high degree of realism. Lego's more recent sets are, arguably, even more realistic and advanced, but they are part of the PF system, and Lego has largely abandoned the practice of individual engine/car sets. This engine was very nicely paired with the TTX Intermodal Double Stack Car (container car) that came out the following year. The engine itself is a close approximation of an EMD GP38-2 and the set includes two mini-figures. Incidentally, the couplers use the old magnets which Lego has subsequently redesigned to be more child safe.

This particular train is mainly of interest to collectors and individuals with large 9 volt layouts. The train can be modified for use in a PF system, but you have to tinker with it to find a way to place the PF battery and infrared receiver. Lego came out with a new PF customizable freight engine in 2011 (the Maersk Train, #10219) but Lego retired that set in late 2012 and prices have subsequently gone far north.

Cheers
