We bought this set at farm store this Christmas for our 3 year old. While she loves the set as a whole, we were pretty disappointed to be putting it together Christmas Eve and find that Adam Cartwright and Little Joe were in pieces. Literally, each of them in about 6-7 pieces. Now, I've watched a lot of Bonanza episodes, but I truly can't remember one in which the two brothers step on a land mine. :) We try to put them back together and the minute she picks one up they fall apart again. So she's a little disappointed about only having 2 riders left. That and most of the horses fall down more than they stand up. I contacted the company about the mutilated figures and it's been your classic game of "pass the buck". Disappointing. All I want is an Adam and a Joe that can ride their horses. Our daughter otherwise loves playing make believe with the set...she's finally decided that her horses just need a lot of sleep (when they fall down and stay down). Another thing I would change is that the saddles and bridles and reins are all separate pieces, I suppose so that you could interchange them on the horses? But there are only two sets, and 4 horses. We have another brand of play horses about the same size (MUCH cheaper set, ironically) and they have "built on" saddles/bridles, and she actually plays with those more because the Ponderosa riders fit on them and they don't fall down. The saddles, etc. with the Breyer set are extremely flimsy, and I can't imagine them lasting long, esp. with a kid under 10. She can't come close to doing it herself, either, so every time she wants to change horses, Mom gets to saddle 'em up. Overall, fun concept, poor execution. I expected more from this company.
